Galvanised steel pipes and cast-iron drainage that have been working for decades eventually need replacement. The process is delicate — we are working in someone's home, so cleanliness, proper scheduling and minimal disruption are paramount for us. When is pipe replacement in an apartment needed? With corroded, scale-filled galvanised steel pipes — these pipes are on average 40–60 years old in Tallinn panel-block buildings and their diameter narrows every year. With cast-iron sewer pipes — the pipe walls are brittle and break easily during renovation work. With recurring leaks — if the same spot keeps leaking, it makes more sense to replace the whole section at once. First we remove the old pipes (galvanised steel, cast-iron drainage). Then we install new water supply in PP-R or PEX — both cold and hot water lines. Drainage is installed in PVC pipe with the correct gradient (minimum 1–2 cm per metre). At the end of each stage we carry out checks — shut-off tests and a pressure test for water supply, and a flow test for drainage. Most apartment replacement projects are completed in 2–4 days (depending on apartment size). We coordinate water shut-offs with the building caretaker in advance — usually 4–8 hours during daytime.
